Group looking to revitalise 'eyesore'
21 November 2008

WITH a new committee, new constitution and new impetus, a popular Lowestoft-based group is calling on locals to bring a “new vitality” to their efforts to transform an eyesore.

Earlier this year, neighbourhood management group Lowestoft Together awarded £155,000 to the Fen Park Friends to regenerate the park.

Given Fen Park had been neglected for many years and become an “almost disused eyesore,” according to locals, this was a more than worthy cause and with overgrown islands and a large silted pond that had become a dumping ground the group were given a major lift with funds from Lowestoft Together.

And breathing new life into the committee of Fen Park Friends, there is more good news. Having worked on the project for some years with what seemed to them to be little encouragement their plans have now been approved.

“Fen Park Friends are soon to seek tenders for de-silting the large pond and a myriad of works associated with regenerating the park and making it an enjoyable and healthy place to relax,” a spokesman for the group said.

At a public meeting on November 11, the committee voted to adopt a new constitution.

New people have now joined the committee. They are: Nigel Thirtle, Stacy and Johnny Goddard and Marion Small. The other members of the committee remain the same: Richard Jolley (chairman), Linda Jolley (secretary), Clair Strachan (vice chair) and Gordon Strachan (ponds and executive officer).

A decision has been made to get rid of the toilets on Fen Park by local councillors. We as a group regenerating the park feel these are a necessity for people using Fen Park. We would like your comments on this? We as a group will try our best to see if something can be done, but we think when they make their minds up that`s it! We are annoyed that we where not consulted as we are the group that are working on this project with the council to make the Park a better place for all to visit and enjoy.

We are planning a Summer Fete to be held on the park, on Sunday 24th August 2008 from 11pm to 4pm, the reason for holding our fundraising event on a Sunday was from the publics request after last year`s event.

We are also looking for local volunteers to help out or run a stall for us on the day.

We have still got a long way to go with the regeneration of the park; so If you would like to come on board as a member or even join the committee please contact us through this site; We are not asking you to give up your social life; just a few hours now and again and you will be surprised what a difference this makes! You can meet and make new friends and at the same time have your say as to what could happen on the park. Our next public meeting is on Tuesday 10th June, at the Salvation Army Hall, Carlton Road, at 7-15pm, all welcome.
